Cardiac Arrest at the Gym: Why Every Gym-Goer Should Know About AEDs

Published

If you are someone who regularly goes to the gym, I want you to ask your trainer one simple question:

“Do you have an AED in the gym?”

You may wonder why I am asking this.

Even Fit People Can Have a Cardiac Emergency

We often assume that someone who is young, active and extremely fit is safe from a sudden cardiac event. Unfortunately, that is not always the case.

A person can suddenly collapse during exercise due to a life-threatening heart rhythm problem. In such situations, every second matters.

One device that can make a critical difference is an AED — Automated External Defibrillator.

What Is an AED?

An AED is a portable device designed to assess the heart's rhythm and, when appropriate, deliver an electrical shock to help restore a potentially life-threatening abnormal rhythm.

The device provides voice and visual instructions, making it possible for trained staff or bystanders to use it while emergency medical help is on the way.

When someone experiences sudden cardiac arrest, early CPR and rapid defibrillation can be lifesaving.

My Simple Advice to Every Gym-Goer

The next time you visit your gym, don't just ask about the equipment, trainers or workout programs.

Ask your gym trainer: “Do you have an AED, and does your staff know how to use it?”

Having an AED readily available, along with staff trained in basic emergency response and CPR, can help a gym respond quickly if a cardiac emergency occurs.

As a Cardiologist in Hubli and Heart Specialist in Hubli, I believe fitness should always go hand in hand with safety.

Stay fit. Stay safe. Because fitness should never come at the cost of your life.
